Country Midwife, LLC of Green Bay applauds the following area Hospital Birthing Centers for their visionary policies on Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC). Nationally, the rate of surgical birth is 30%-50%, with variances by region. The World Health Organization recommends that no region or hospital should have a cesarean rate over 15%. A vast number of surgical births are performed due to previous surgical birth with the current wellness status of mother and baby having no bearing on the decision to perform another cesarean section. Medical policies and understanding of “best practices” have been a loose cannon, bouncing from VBAC encouraged to VBAC banned and then to VBAC sometimes encouraged. The following local hospitals, as of 2009, are listed by the Wisconsin Chapter of The International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN) as allowing VBAC. We acknowledge the social, political and legal pressures which shape hospital birthing policies and make it difficult to establish reasonable guidelines. We appreciate your continuing efforts to offer sensible choices to families who have had surgical births in the past and wish to give birth normally in future pregnancies. That is progress!
